During monsoon, when the rains avail the nascence of small saplings, we conduct Plantations. Saplings provided by the Forest Dept. of Durgapur are planted in various areas inside the campus.

ruNIT

It’s a 5 kms mini-marathon run promoting the cause of preserving of nature and earth’s resources. Athletes and non-athletes join this marathon which is conducted during mid-February every year to make it a successful event.

Village Trip

It’s an exclusive trip by the core members of the club who visit a village every year and bring up solutions to the existing environmental problems of that village. It is synonymous to village-adoption, and observe the changes and improvements of that particular village.

Envoice

Imagine if trees gave free Wi-Fi, we’d all be planting like crazy. Its pity they only give us the oxygen we breathe. It’s time to raise our voices for the mother earth. What we are doing to the environment is a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another. So, let’s come forward and speak our hearts out on the present scenario because speaking triggers emotions, which in turn initiate changes. Prakriti, the official environmental club of NIT Durgapur presents to you EnVoice edition III, a platform where not only voices will be raised but will also be listened. EnVoice, as the name suggests is your voice for the environment, gives you an opportunity to speak on latest environmental issues. Like every year, Prakriti comes up with new and innovative twists to make it more interesting. EnVoice will be conducted in two rounds. The first round will be a case study based group discussion among batches of 7-8 participants. Based on individual performances, participants will be selected for the final round.

Nature is beautiful and guess what??? It’s everywhere! And though many of us forgotten the allure of whistling willows and babbling brooks, chances are if you’re reading this, you are NOT one of those people. Most likely you are a beautiful lover of nature and because you’re, we the environmental club of NIT Durgapur “Prakriti” presents you the chance to showcase your nature love in the form of nature photography. All you have to do is capture the natural beauty of our campus in your cameras and send your entries in our Facebook page through message.

Earth Hour

The star event where lights-off for one hour is seen as a symbol for the commitment to the planet. The event we organize involves the candle march in and outside the campus by the students of NIT Durgapur organized our team has won many accolades. The lights are put out for an hour during which candle march is proceeded. The support provided by the management and of the campus and the professors is praiseworthy.

Roll up rags

This is one of the events we Earth Warriors are tagged, by most of the inhabitants of this campus. We find this as a responsibility to clean up our own home before trying to reform the whole wide world. Teams are divided among which we, the team along with volunteers from NSS and interested people for the cause try cleaning up the campus from non-degradable plastic.

When it’s the festival of lights, we celebrate with the residents of NIT in a eco-friendly way. Team Prakriti propagates the propaganda of avoiding fire-crackers which cause pollution and are harmful. We conduct Diya Making Competition which has the participants making eco-friendly diyas, and also Rangoli Making Competition on Diwali.

Mini Composting

On the day we got our Independence, we've taken a small step to restore the glory of our mother Earth. Mini composting project is an initiative to encourage usage of Natural fertilizers over the artificial ones. Prakriti Club thanks all the people behind this project and Prof. K Adhikari for his auspicious presence during the projects's inaugration.

Aquaponics

Aquaponics is a sustainable food production system that combines conventional aquaculture, with hydroponics in a symbiotic environment.

A research project run by the Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies (CERES) consists of an energy and water efficient, free-standing aquaponic urban farm that provides communities with access to low cost organic products and food growing training.

Aquaponic systems consist of network of pipes and pumps that circulate waste water from a freshwater fish tank to water filled garden beds. Beneficial bacteria that occur naturally, convert the fish waste into soluble nutrients which food crops can absorb and use for growth.

Crops most commonly grown in Aquaponics systems include Asian greens, culinary herbs, lettuces and tomatoes, but most plants that can be grown in a vegetable garden bed can be grown in an aquaponics system.

Clay Incinerator

The used napkins if left or thrown in open can pose serious health hazards; therefore proper disposal to prevent the spread of bacteria and foul odor is important. Further, since sanitary napkins are made of synthetic material, it takes around 500-800 years for them to decompose. The average Indian woman in urban areas throws away more than 10,000 disposable pads in her lifetime! If every woman of reproductive age starts using sanitary napkins, a staggering 58,500 million waste pads would be generated in India every year.

This problem lead to introduction of incinerator “Ashudhinashak”, which means destruction of impurities in Sanskrit. This incinerator can burn many used napkins at a time, and can turn them into ashes without spreading smoke. When the incinerator is filled with used napkins, a burning matchstick is inserted in it through an opening in the bottom. The waste then burns down into ashes that can be removed using a tool provided along with the incinerator. The ash produced can be mixed with soil to nourish plants. This novel innovation prevents littering and helps women to dispose of their used napkins in an eco-friendly way.

Mini Water Cooler

In the energy saving air cooler, as air meets the fabric material the pressure drops which results in decrease in the temperature. Then as the air enters, the water in the fabric material absorbs the latent heat of vaporization from air and evaporates, further decreases n the temperature of the air.

Candled Charger

A thermoelectric module is a circuit containing thermoelectric materials which generates electricity from heat directly. A thermoelectric module consists of two dissimilar thermoelectric materials joined at their ends: an n-type (negatively charged); and a p-type (positively charged) semiconductors. A direct electric current will flow in the circuit when there is a temperature difference between the two materials. Generally, the current magnitude is directly proportional to the temperature difference. In application, thermoelectric modules in power generation work in very tough mechanical and thermal conditions. Because they operate in very high temperature gradient, the modules are subject to large thermally induced stresses and strains for long periods of time. They also are subject to mechanical fatigue caused by large number of thermal cycles. Thus, the junctions and materials must be selected so that they survive these tough mechanical and thermal conditions. Also, the module must be designed such that the two thermoelectric materials are thermally in parallel, but electrically in series. The efficiency of a thermoelectric module is greatly affected by the geometry of its design.
